WGNRR encourages its members, partners and allies to mobilise around two very special days of action:

May 28 - International Day of Action for Women's Health

In 1987, during a reunion of members of WGNRR in Costa Rica, May 28 was declared as International Day of Action for Women's Health. Since then, May 28 has been internationally renowned and activities are held worldwide by women’s and health groups. In 1999, it was officially recognised by the government of South Africa.

Each year, WGNRR collaborates with its members and partners on a call to action around a pressing SRHR issue. The call for action materials are developed and produced by WGNRR in its three working languages. They are disseminated to all members and partners, some of whom then translate the materials into their working or local languages. These materials are used to raise awareness and to complement campaign activities. The campaign culminates on the commemoration of the International Day of Action for Women’s Health.

For 2010-2015, WGNRR’s Call for Action campaigns will defend international human rights committments, and demand respect for sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice.

 

September 28 - International Day of Action for Access to Safe and Legal Abortion

September 28th  -  Latin American and Caribbean Campaign for the Decriminalization of Abortion was formed in 1990 at the Fifth Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Meeting, held in Argentina. This date was chosen in commemoration of the abolition of slavery in Brazil which is now remembered as the day of the "free womb" demanding for safe and legal abortion for all women. 

Although the September 28 campaign originated and has a long history in Latin America and the Caribbean, it has enormous international relevance.  Women’s access to abortion around the world is becoming increasingly restricted- violating their sexual and reproductive health rights and with great cost to their health as well as the health of their families and communities.
 
At the request of Latin American and the Caribbean organisers to support the regional campaign on a global level WGNRR has launched  in 2011 September 28 as the Global Day of Action for Access to Safe and Legal Abortion. September 28 Global Action Day is intended to be a multi-year campaign that will gradually expand year after year, involving members and partners around the world to advocate for reproductive justice and the decriminalisation of abortion.
