During the post-election violence in Kenya and the clashes between, primarily Kalenjin and Kikuyo, about 1200 people were killed, many more injured and more than 600 000 people became internally displaced persons, IDP´s.  More than 3000 were placed in tented camps outside Nakuru.

A huge empty field was called Pipeline IDP camp. Sadly enough it still exists, although with fewer people, despite the promises from the government.

From 2001-2009 Chilean conservative and religious opposition tried to ban most of the contraceptive methods used in the country, this measure would have affected a 21% of the population who would then being unable to decide on their maternity (and paternity) and the spacing of their children. This measure would have skyrocket the numbers of unsafe abortion in this country and would have horrible consequences for maternal health in this country.

This is a general historic account of the Movement for the Defence of contraception in Chile, it struggle to defend SRHR and the event that is better known as “El Pildorazo” (rougly translated as Pill Blast).

Today in my mailbox good news sweetened my morning. It was about a hate crime case that ended well in court and hopeflly this ruling will became a landmark. I wanted to know more, so I started surfing the web and I want to share with you what I learned and my joy about this victory (and my sadness that it was necessary in the first place).

Why mandatory HIV testing for pregnant women is a Human Rights Violation?

In Chile has been decreed that pregnant women will be mandatorily screened for HIV and their partners will searched by the doctors. This post discusses this situation from a Women’s Rights point of view.

The Facts

Chile is currently experiencing the awakening of its citizenship. This has been primarily expressed by the student’s movement, who have challenged the notion of profit making in the education and denounced the inequities expressed in this area.  These claims arise because they have not been considered by the Chilean democratic governments; hence they have been called “democratic debts”.  Another of these debts is the decriminalization of abortion since Chile is one of the few countries in the world with total restrictions on it, together with  other Latin American countries such as Nicaragua, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic.
